2000 Hancock High School Hockey team is the
Runner-up State Champions.
2000 Inaugural year for the local Finlandia University Men's Hockey program, their first coach was Scott Mikesch 2000-01, they are currently coached by Joe Burcar 2001-date. Their home ice is the Houghton County Arena in Hancock with a seating capacity of 1,200.
2000 Portage Lake Pioneers won the Gibson Cup for the 4th season in a row.
2000 Inaugural year for the Keweenaw Wings, the 15U girls hockey team (2000-02). The Keweenaw Wings Girls Hockey Program is part of the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association based in Houghton, Michigan. The K-Wings midgets have established themselves as one of the strongest teams in the Upper Great Lakes region. The team plays 40-50 games per year, has won numerous tournaments in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and have made the semi-final round of the Michigan State Championship Tournament three times (twice at Tier I, once at Tier II).
2000 Inaugural year for Michigan Tech's annual Randy McKay 3-on-3 Classic Hockey Tournament at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Randy McKay, a Michigan Tech graduate and hockey player was a forward for the Montreal Canadiens and also played for the Detroit Red Wings, sponsors the 3-on-3 tournament and skills competition. A scholarship in Randy McKay's name is awarded to a future MTU student.
2001 Michigan played Michigan State hockey outside in a modified football field with over 74,000 people in attendance; a local hockey player/ref, Kevin Langseth, from Calumet, was a ref in this world record setting game.
2002 Inaugural year for the local AAA Midget Hockey Team, the Ojibwa Eagles, coached by Scott Nevenhoven. Their home ice is the Michigan Tech ice arena. The Eagles Board President is Jim Markham and the team is sponsored by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Other Board members included: Gary Howard -Tres, Judy Niemi -Secr, Ralph Bammert, Mike Hauswirth, Ken Helminen, Paul Hietala, Jeff Mikesch, Mike Olson, Stan Rogers, Pat Rose, Steve Tepsa. The Eagles record for their first season was 29W-29L-9T.
2003 Calumet High School won the State Hockey Championship in Class B-C-D by a score of 3-1 over Riverview Gabriel Richard HS. Their record for the season was 25-3-2, they were coached by Jim Crawford.

March 2004 Portage Lake Pioneers won the Gibson Cup in a series of games against the Calumet Wolverines. Picture needed!!
Sept 2004 Inaugural year for the local Finlandia University Women's Hockey Team. Their first coach is Chris Salani. They will compete in two separate conferences. They are in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association and a member of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). They compete against five other women's teams in the NCHA: Wisconsin-Superior, Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Wisconsin-River Falls, Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Lake Forest College. Their home ice is the Houghton County Arena in Hancock, with it's new locker rooms and renovated lobby (summer 2004).
